The method

How Tooti works

Tooti is built on one idea: learn first what you will hear most. Here is how a learner goes from zero to everyday conversation.

The frequency model — English: 100 → 68%, 250 → 78%, 316 → 80%, 500 → 84%, 721 → 87%, 1,000 → 89%, 1,166 → 90%, 2,000 → 93%, 3,000 → 95%, 3,121 → 95%, 5,000 → 97%, 9,162 → 98%40%50%60%70%80%90%100%1003001,0003,00010,000BasicsEverydayWords learned, most frequent first

The frequency model

We ranked every word by how often it is really heard in conversation. The curve shows how much everyday speech you understand as you learn words in that order. It rises steeply at first: the first few hundred words do most of the work.

Measured on 111 million words and tested on conversations the model had never seen.

1. A placement that respects what you know

In about five minutes Tooti checks three things: which common words you recognise, which basic patterns you can use and how much you follow when you listen.

Words you already know are marked as known and never taught again. Complete beginners skip the test and start with Mission 1.

2. A plan with a date on it

Choose how many minutes a day you can give. Tooti calculates when you can expect to reach each milestone and recalculates every week from your real progress.

If life gets busy, the plan adapts. It never punishes you for a missed day.

3. Missions from real life

Each session is built around a mission: a short scene such as ordering food, meeting someone or asking for help.

You hear the conversation, check that you understood it, learn the new words and patterns inside it, and then use them to answer.

4. Patterns side by side with your language

Grammar is shown as a pattern you can reuse, next to the same idea in your own language. You see what changes and why, without tables to memorise.

5. A memory engine that times your reviews

Every word has a memory strength. Tooti schedules each review just before you would forget, so a few minutes a day are enough to keep everything fresh.

6. A new script without the stress

If the language you are learning uses a different alphabet, a starter module teaches its letters and sounds with words you will meet in your first missions.

Why trust Tooti

Robust by design, honest by default

Learning a language is a big investment of your time. Here is why the plan Tooti gives you is one you can rely on.

  • Built on real speech

Lessons start from 111 million words of real conversation in 13 languages, not from a textbook’s guess at what matters.

  • Tested on unseen speech

Each word list was built on one part of the data and checked on conversations it had never seen. It held: 89.8–90.0% coverage, as predicted.

  • Proven memory science

Reviews are scheduled by FSRS, an open model trained on millions of real reviews and also used by the popular flashcard app Anki.

  • Plans that correct themselves

Your dates are recalculated every week from your own answers, so the plan stays realistic when life gets busy.

  • Honest numbers, checked automatically

No “fluent in 30 days”. Every number on this site is stored with its source and checked by automated tests before each release.

  • Private and dependable

No voice recording, no ad trackers, no chatbot making things up. Every lesson is written and checked, and Tooti keeps working offline.
